Confront Your Fear

Fear is a pretty big liar.  I know because I’ve heard its voice many a time.  It tells you that you can’t do it.  It tells you that the worst thing you can imagine isn’t really the worst.  It tells you that you are alone.

When I was five it told me I wouldn’t have any friends.

When I was eight it told me I would never have siblings.

When I was twelve it told me I could not sing.

When I was fourteen it told me I’d never be accepted.

When I was sixteen it told me I’d never have a boyfriend.

When I was eighteen it told me I couldn’t make it on my own.

When I was twenty it told me I wouldn’t make the grade.

When I was twenty-two it told me I didn’t have what it takes.

When I was twenty-four it told me I was unlovable.

When I was twenty-seven it told me I would never reach my dreams.

When I was thirty it told me I would always be alone.

When I am thirty-two it tells me all of the above (and more)… daily.

LaurenModny_WarriorGoddess-11The thing is though, fear can say whatever it wants.  It can talk until it’s blue in the face for all I care. That doesn’t make it true.

I have a choice on what I listen to and what I allow to influence my life.  I daily have to make the decision that fear does not get to have the final say in my life.  Yes, it’s scary. Yes, it’s loud. Yes, sometimes it can appear as truth. Yes, sometimes if feels impossible to hear anything else.

Just because fear speaks, doesn’t make it truth.

You (and I) are responsible for what we choose to allow in our lives and what we choose to confront.

Someone wonderful told me recently that confronting is simply choosing to face.  To turn around and face head on the thing that has been chasing you all along.  To plant your feet and believe that you are not alone in that moment.  Believe that you have what it takes.

Today, let’s commit to confront our fear.  I can promise you the voice will come. It will tell you that you are not enough.  It will tell you that you don’t have what it takes.  It will tell you any number of things, but I’m here to tell you. It’s not the truth.

It’s only when you choose to face your fear that you realize it’s been powerless all along and it is only then, that you can experience true freedom.

I loved everything about this weekend.  My wonderful friend Ella and I have been planning a staycation together for quite awhile.  It definitely lived up to all our excited planning.  On Friday afternoon I headed out to the mysterious and alluring land beyond the Potomac (aka Virginia) and met up with Ella.  What followed were endless hours of girl talk… yummy gelato… window shopping… chick flicks… trashy magazines… totally cute and snuggly pups… pool time (and WATER SLIDES… first time since I was a kid)… cooking lessons… homemade margaritas…fresh flowers… the farmer’s market…hat shopping (I mean everyone needs a visor for their cruise…right?)…exploring in the woods.

Speaking of the woods, this weekend we also shot our next #YouSparkle shoot with our beautiful friends Lauren and Ashlynn.  It was amazing.  Ashlynn was our fierce warrior princess in the midst of an enchanted forest.  (Doesn’t everyone do this kind of stuff with their friends on the weekend?).  The pictures included above are just a little sneak peek. I can’t wait to show you what Lauren captured. I saw a few shots on her camera and let me tell you… THEY ARE FREAKIN AMAZING!

I hope your weekend was just as relaxing and fun!

Wait a second,
Why, should you care, what they think of you
When you’re all alone, by yourself, do you like you?
Do you like you?

You don’t have to try so hard
You don’t have to, give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don’t have to change a single thing

Take your make-up off
Let your hair down
Take a breath
Look into the mirror, at yourself
Don’t you like you?
Cause I like you

A Year In Review

This year has been pretty much amazing for me.  In no small part because of this blog.  Let me explain before I sound totally full of myself.  You see, keeping this blog has provided me with opportunities to connect with people that I might not have had the chance to otherwise.  It’s at times forced me to get off the couch and go explore my city.  It’s made me think more creatively about my schedule.  It’s caused me to slow down at literally smell the roses.  It’s also provided an outlet to process some important and at times difficult things I’ve encountered over the year.  It’s also helped me make new friends!

I mean really, how awesome is that?

I thought today it would be fun to share a few of my favorite posts and series from the past year.

In thinking about favorites, I’d have to start off with the #StyleLove series.  I mean how incredible are these women? Not only have they allowed me to invade their space and highlight their amazing style but they’ve taken the time to share their heart and the lessons on life they’ve learned along the way. I love this bit of advice that Beth shared in her #StyleLove interview, “Be yourself! You have been beautifully, wonderfully, and uniquely made….so be proud of it! Just think, if everyone were the same, what fun would the world be?!”  Isn’t that just what it’s all about?

This blog has also given me the opportunity to journal my travels and I’ve been to some pretty cool places over the past year including; Denmark, Puerto Rico, London and Bosnia just to name a few.  Looking back over these posts gets me excited to pack my bags again!

Probably one of the only reasons I’ve been able to keep my promise of posting 5x a week is because of the amazing people who have guest posted on the blog over the past year.  Here’s just a few of my favorites: “When Your Clothes Become Your Armor“, “Second Chances” and basically every “Girl Talk” post.  I guess, if I’m forced to admit it, I also enjoyed when the guy’s took over the blog.  Although there was a shocking lack of sparkle that week.

Speaking of sparkle, I love that blogging has provided me the opportunity to work with other creatives on what we’ve termed #YouSparkle projects.  Women like Lauren Modny, Mary-Jane of LeRoy French Flowers, Tanya of Birch+Honey and Ella of Start Close In Styling are just a few of the incredibly inspiration people I’ve had the opportunity to work on these projects with.

In fact, Ella has pretty much revolutionized my style over the past year.  She helped me survive my “No Shopping Challenge” by helping me “Shop My Closet” and find new favorites in the midst of old castoffs.  On top of that she’s helped me tackle the ginormous task of cleaning out my closet and FINALLY defining what my personal style is.

Lastly and I think in my mind, most importantly, this space has allowed me to share my heart with you.  It’s allowed me to share the battles I’m fighting, the lessons I’m learning and the hard won truths I’m holding onto in my own life.  Here are just a few posts that I feel like I’ve poured my heart into over the past year… “Masterpiece“, “Valleys“, “The Comparison Trap“, “Your Story“, “The Unknown” , “Hope is Dangerous“, “Anchor“, “Letting Go“, “The Power of One“… ok, maybe that’s more than a few… I pour my heart into a lot of what I write around here.

I’ve said it before and I will continue to say it… Thank you!

Thank you for coming along on this adventure with me.  I’d love to hear from you.  Do you have a favorite moment or post from this past year on Love Always Hannah?

I love these photos from our #YouSparkle photo shoot a few weeks back.   The color combination, the sparkle, the polka dots…the details.  So much loveliness.  Each detail drew me in to take another look.

“The details are not the details. They make the design.” – Charles Eames

I know the common phrase says that “the Devil is in the details” but I actually think that the DELIGHT is in the details.   The details add depth.  They add richness and they add story.

It’s the same in life.

We each are allotted the same number of days each year and the same number of hours a day.  If we’re not careful those days can blur one from another.  What makes a day stand out from the rest are the details it contains.

Who did you meet?  Where did you go?  Who did you hug? What made you laugh?

The true treasure of each day is in the details.  It’s in the shared laughter.  The kind smile.  The beautiful flower.  The delicious first sip of coffee (or tea in my case).  It’s in the time taken with people.  It’s not in the busy agendas.  The endless “to-do” lists.

I watched this movie recently called “About Time”.  I’ve wanted to see it since it came out, but it took a super long plane trip for me to actually make the time (ironic? Just a bit).  It’s a wonderful story.

Spoiler alert – you will cry.

At least I did. A lot.  There’s lots of twists in the story line (some require you to suspend reality just a bit) but the ultimate message of the movie, I believe, is simple… make the most of the time you are given.  Savor the moments. Delight in the details.  Time moves quickly.

Treasure the moments you’ve been given. Delight in the details that each day brings.  Appreciate the beauty all around you.  It’s there. You just have to stop and look for it.

Party For A Cause

I love throwing parties!  I thrive on coordinating details, making things pretty and thinking about ways to ensure guests have fun and feel valued.

View More:

That’s a big reason why I started my business, Piccadilly, a few years ago.  They say if you find something you love you’ll never work a day in your life (I like that idea).  When I’m planning a party or styling a photoshoot, it doesn’t feel like work, it feels like play. That’s why I love it!

Recently a few of my favorite creatives and I got together for a #YouSparkle Valentine’s Day inspired photoshoot.  I loved seeing how each woman involved used what was in their hands to create something truly beautiful!

My friend Mary Jane of LeRoy French Flowers designed this incredibly beautiful arrangement and Tanya of Birch+Honey lent her creativity to crafting the gorgeous valentines I shared earlier this week.

Melissa worked her magic with hair and makeup and Lauren captured every detail with such an artistic eye.

Colleen from Faith, Hope, Love & Luck made the absolutely scrumptious cake and cookies and Ella wowed me again with her ability to style such fun looks.

I never thought that throwing parties could actually make a difference. It’s just something that is in my hand to do and I enjoy.  It’s only been over time that I realized that I can take what I love and use it to help other people.  That’s why I decided at the onset of Piccadilly, that 10% of everything the company made would go towards supporting the A21 Campaign and the fight against human trafficking.

Maybe you’re like me and like throwing parties or maybe your talents lie elsewhere.  Either way, I want to encourage you to think creatively about how you can use the things that come easily to you and perhaps, don’t feel like work, to bless others.  There’s a great organization called LOVE146 that has developed an awesome guide on ways that you can use your gifts to make a difference this Valentine’s Day. You should definitely check it out!

Send Some Love

Happy Valentine’s Week! This is absolutely one of my favorite times of year.  Partly because everything is pink hearts and sparkles. Partly because my birthday is just around the corner (yay!). Mostly because this time of year reminds me that love really is the greatest gift of all.

View More:

Whether it is the love of a friend, a family member or a significant other, there is much to be grateful for.  I think sometimes the temptation, especially at Valentine’s Day, is to focus on what you don’t have.  Perhaps you’re single and you want to be in a relationship.  Perhaps you’re in a relationship and want to get married. Maybe you’re married and longing for children.  Whatever season you are in, there is the opportunity to sit back and grow dissatisfied with your current circumstance.  If you find yourself in that situation, I truly think the healthiest thing you can do is focus your attention on others.

That’s why one of my favorite things to do this time of year is make valentines.  It’s a simple and fun way to let the people in your world know that they matter and that you love them.

It doesn’t hurt that it allows me to pull out my stash of pink confetti, construction paper and glitter. Really, could anything be better?

There are people in your world longing to hear that they matter.  You have the power to speak truth, instill value and show love in some very simple ways (just get out your glue stick!)

If you’ve hung around this blog long enough you may have heard me talk about the heart breaking issue of human trafficking.  It’s estimated that there are AT LEAST twenty seven million slaves in our world today.  That’s more than any at any other time in history.  In an effort to find out about what part I could play in righting this truly horrendous wrong, I came across this very simple suggestion on the A21 Campaign’s home page.

Send a valentine to a survivor of human trafficking.

These women have experienced so much pain and yet they are survivors .  Each day they are taking the steps to rebuild their lives.  How awesome an opportunity to be able to write them a word of encouragement as they heal.

I want to encourage you this week to take a few minutes and let your sisters know you are standing with them.  Let them know they are loved.  Let them know that they are beautiful.  Let them know they are not alone.

You don’t have to make your card by hand, a simple word of encouragement will do.  You can find more information on how to send your message here.
