There’s a phrase that has been echoing around in my heart and mind for awhile now.
No matter how many roses I surround it with above, it’s still a concept that I find a bit hard to swallow. My natural tendency is to tend towards what is easy. My brain is always looking for ways to simplify 5 steps to 3 or 3 steps to 1. I like easy. Easy is well, easy.
The thing is, most things in life that are good for you (and if we’re honest, the things we really, really want) are not easy. They take effort. They take work.
If someone tells you that something worthwhile will be easy… well, I don’t know if I’d trust them.
Things of value take work.
Like relationships for example. They take work. You won’t just fall into an amazing friendship. You might fall into like or love with someone but if you want it to last, it will take work. True story. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.
What are some other things in life that require a bit of extra work? Perhaps its your finances (or mine). Perhaps it your self-confidence. Perhaps its your health. Perhaps its a relationship like I mentioned above. Whatever it is, at the end of the day the “work” is worth it. Why, you ask?
Because YOU are worth it.
The thing is, we live in an imperfect world. Shocking I know. Each of us are the sum of our life experiences, the good, the bad and the ugly. At the end of the day, no matter how wonderful or difficult our lives have been thus far, we are each broken in our own unique ways. We each have parts of our lives that need work. If you’ve got issues…awesome…welcome to the club.
Here’s the challenge though. If you’re anything like me, along with the brokenness can come the almost paralyzing belief that YOU ALONE struggle with this issue. This can be quickly followed by the thought that there is absolutely NOTHING you can do about it. “You’re broken. Tough luck. The end.” echoes through your head as you settle in for what you’re sure will be a second rate life.
AHHHHHH!!!! It’s not true! Stop it!
As I wrote about earlier this week, don’t shut down your heart. Don’t believe the lies that say you are powerless to change. It’s not true. Whatever, and I do mean whatever, you are dealing with is not too big for God. He’s waaaaayyyy bigger than anything you might be facing. Guaranteed. On top of that the Bible says,
“You can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens you!“ – Phil. 4:13
There’s no asterisk on all. When He says all, He means all. Yes, there is work to be done. You’re not perfect, neither am I. We need to grow. We need to do the work.
If its not obvious, this is a topic I care a lot about. Probably because I’m personally feeling challenged to “do the work” in a number of areas in my life. That being said, I think this will probably become a recurring topic around here and I’m hoping to have some other wonderful people who are “doing their own work” stop by and share.
I hope you’ll be inspired to ask yourself some of the hard questions and start focusing on areas in your own life that need work. The good news is, you don’t have to do it alone. There’s a whole world of us out here that need to do our own work AND there is a God in heaven that is with you, coaching you along, every step of the way.
p.s. SPOILER ALERT : The even better news is that a lot of “doing the work” isn’t really about you doing anything more than letting God into your life to do what only He can do.
